The goal of the Life Skills class is to teach students essential functional life skills from the Pennsylvania Standards.


The following themes will be focused on during the school year:

  • Home & Indoor activities
  • Nature & Outdoor activities
  • School & community activities
  • Personal Hygiene which may include but not limited to; showering, tooth brushing, finger nail care, care of self during menstrual cycle, toileting,  
  • Communication skills
  • Occupational possibilities (Employer-employee functions)
  • Appropriate work habits and behaviors
  • Self-management
  • Human Relations
  • Telephone skills (answering the telephone; making phone calls; taking messages
  • Current events
  • Sometimes teachable moments happen and these will be addressed if something arises


Within each theme, activities will focus on the performance tasks indicated in the functional guide. The activities may include:

  • Recognizing & identifying information
  • Providing examples
  • Describing information
  • Accessing information using different sources
  • Making appropriate choices
  • Understanding the impact and consequences of one’s actions
  • Hands on activities to show understanding
  • Traveling in the community to practice skills learned in class
  • Demonstrating knowledge through application both in and out of school


Materials used may vary according to each child’s abilities.  Some materials used are but not limited to:

·         Paper and pencil

·         Scholastic Magazine

·         Computers

·         Internet

·         Cooking items

·         Vocational items

·         Items found in a bathroom; toothbrush, shower, towels, bathing items, feminine hygiene items, finger nail brush, finger nail clippers, 



  • Your child comes to school rested and ready to learn. 
  • Agenda is signed
  • Homework is complete


Classroom rules:

  • Treat other better than what you want to be treated (Respect)
  • Be on time
  • Come to class prepared
  • Remain on task
