Wellsboro Area High School Concert Band Syllabus (Spring 2015)

Materials: Instrument, music, lesson book, and a pencil.

Course Objectives:

The main objective of the high school band is to challenge and encourage students to grow in their knowledge and understanding of diverse musical styles through daily rehearsals, lessons, performance opportunities, and concert attendance. Students will take individual and/or small group lessons to provide them with the skills necessary for mastery of their individual instruments. The concert band will have four major performances during the spring semester - Spring Band Concert, Memorial Day Parade, graduation ceremony and the Laurel Festival Parade.

Attendance Policies:

·         Rehearsals – Students will rehearse as an ensemble during 8th period every B day.

·         Performances – Students must attend all scheduled band performances without exception (barring student illness or death in the family). Absence from a performance will result in a 0% for the performance portion of the overall grade, and a reduction of 15 points on the 9 weeks grade.

·         Lessons – Students will be required to attend a minimum of five lessons per marking period. It is understood that academic responsibilities may prohibit a student from attending a lesson, but it is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements for a make-up lesson. Missed lessons need to be made up before the next scheduled lesson. Students taking private lessons from another music educator may ask to be exempt from in-school lessons.

Grading Procedures:

·         Each rehearsal will be worth 20 points.

·         Each lesson will be worth 20 points. Students must play individually for Mrs. Smithgall at least 4 times during each 9 weeks. The 5th lesson can be a group lesson. Practicing while I have a class in a different room does not constitute a lesson!

·         Each lesson book assignment, set of scales, or band selection passed will be worth 20 points.  Each student must pass a minimum of five lesson assignments/band selections per marking period.

·         Performances required for semester two: Spring Band Concert, Memorial Day Parade and Service, graduation ceremony and Laurel Festival Parade. Each performance will be worth 100 points.

·         Each category of grading will be weighted in the following manner:

Rehearsals – 50%

Lessons – 20%

Music completed (pages/songs) – 15%

Performances – 15%

Student Behavior:

·         Arrive on time to rehearsals, lessons and performances.

·         Get out instrument & music; look at the board for that day’s objectives. Put music in order on stands.

·         No food, drink (except water), or gum is allowed!

·         No electronic devices of any kind will be allowed! Keep devices OFF and OUT of SIGHT!

·         Please try to keep the band room and the instrument storage room clean and neat.
