This course begins with concentrated analysis of student problems -- paragraph development and organization, techniques for writing longer papers, and proper use of transitional devices, active voice, and parallel structure. I spend two weeks dealing with usage and formal writing. The papers that are written during the first semester will consist of a narrative essay (1-2 pages), a descriptive essay (1-2 pages) an expository essay (1 page), and a persuasive essay (2-4 pages). The persuasive essay will be due during the 2nd semester. After the persuasive essay is turned in, students will spend time in the library researching a topic. This research turns into a 5 page paper that is due the two weeks before the end of school. During the entire semester, students will also be writing essays about their literature.
